Directly above the main square in Tomar stands the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage-listed ‘Convento de Cristo’, a convent with a mixed history of religion and Knights Templar. There is a small car park by the entrance, though it can be difficult to find a space at busy times so if you're feeling energetic try the steep walk up (there are also tuk-tuks available, plying their trade from the main square, but we haven't tried this) . There are beautiful gardens filled with orange trees (see if you can reach to pick one!), and a fantastic view out to the city and beyond, which you can stroll around these free of charge. Entrance to the Convento itself is 6 euros standard, or half price if you are over 65 or a student (take proof). It’s well worth going inside to experience the diverse history of the buildings.
