This is the main city of the Northern Alentejo, it is not the prettiest of cities but it has some fantastic restaurants and sits in a very good wine area, so you’ll get some great wines to match the food. Our favourite restaurants here are ‘Solar do Forcado’ (high quality traditional food), ‘TombaLobos’ (well regarded chef and Portuguese food with a modern twist) and ‘À do Ferro’ (more casual, but high quality Portuguese food). The city also has a very good tapestry museum, which showcases Portuguese tapestries - old and new, and can convert even the most cynical visitor into a tapestry fan! (Museu de Tapeçarias – Guy Fino, closed on Mondays, open 9.30am-1pm, 2.30-6pm).
