A fantastic small city to visit, about 50 minutes drive away. The city has a pretty river and park, good shops and a quaint town square for a coffee and watching the world go by. Directly above the main square in Tomar stands the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage-listed ‘Convento de Cristo’, a convent with a mixed history of religion and Knights Templar. It has beautiful gardens filled with orange trees and you can stroll around these free of charge. Entrance is 6 euros standard, or half price if you are over 65 or a student (take proof), and it’s worth going inside to experience the diverse history of the buildings. Our favourite restaurant in Tomar is ‘Abrigo da Alma’.
