Penedo Furado

There are many great walks direct from the windmill, however if you're happy to drive a short distance, there are some very impressive boardwalks (or passadicos) that enable you to access rivers, waterfalls and valleys that were previously impassable. One of these is Penedo Furado. This set of boardwalks, steps and trails was built in 2019. At the centre of the circuit is a river beach with toilets, cafe and playground, and along the way there are some beautiful waterfalls, swimming pools and view points (miradouros) to enjoy. Penedo Furado gets busy in summer and parking is tricky, but we like to go in spring or autumn when you will a lot less people. The trails can be steep and stony in parts so the whole circuit is not suited for people with mobility issues, but much of the distance is on boardwalks and with guardrails, and there's always the river beach for people to enjoy who don't want to do the hike. Penedo Furado is approximately 30 minutes from the windmill in the Conselho of Vila de Rei.
